SUMMARY:ECTRI TG Traffic Management & Modelling Webinar #8
DESCRIPTION:The eighth webinar of the ECTRI TG on Traffic Management & Modelling was held on October 6 2022 from 13:00 to 14:10 CET. \nIvan Postigo [VTI / TU Delft]\nModeling Automated driving in microscopic traffic simulation for traffic performance evaluations: Aspects to consider and state of the practice. \nSix important aspects to consider for modeling automated driving in microscopic traffic simulation are proposed in this work. The role of authorities\, the role of users\, the vehicle system\, the perception of surroundings based on the vehicle’s sensors\, the vehicle connectivity features\, and the role of the infrastructure both physical and digital. We motivate and discuss why each aspect could determine how automated vehicles operate\, and therefore\, why considerations regarding each aspect need to be taken into account in models for automated driving in microscopic traffic simulations. Furthermore\, the state of the practice\, research gaps and research directions in relation to these aspects are identified for the development of more realistic microscopic models for automated driving. This will benefit transparency and quality of traffic performance impact assessment of scenarios with mixed traffic and vehicles at different levels of driving automation.\nPublished in IEEE T-ITS (Modeling Automated Driving in Microscopic Traffic Simulations for Traffic Performance Evaluations : Aspects to Consider and State of the Practice (diva-portal.org) \nElina Aittoniemi [VTT]\nStudy on the efficiency and environmental impact assessment for Level 3 automated driving on European motorways \nThe study assessed the potential impacts\, arising from changes to driving behaviour (in terms of vehicle motion control and desired time gap)\, with introduction of conditionally automated vehicles on the European motorway network. Effects in representative conditions (in terms of speed limit\, traffic volume\, fleet composition) were estimated with microsimulation using Vissim and results scaled up to the European network by utilising extensive data on the motorway network\, traffic volumes and weather conditions. The study was part of the L3Pilot project\, co-funded by the European Horizon 2020 programme.

SUMMARY:ECTRI TG Freight and Logistics webinar #16
DESCRIPTION:The webinar of the ECTRI TG on Freight and Logistics webinar was held on November 4\, 2022\, from 13:00 to 14:00 CET. \nSpeaker: Dr. ir. H.J.M. (Harrie) Bastiaansen (TNO) \nTitle: Logistics Data Spaces in View of the EU Data Strategy – The DASLOGIS Project \nAbstract: The value of the data economy is enormous. Sharing and access to data are key to push forward innovation and to create new business models and opportunities. At the same time\, data sovereignty and trust are key European values for data sharing and are fundamental in the design of federative data sharing solutions and data spaces. Hence\, federative data sharing is clearly on the radar of the European Commission. Its release of the European Data Strategy\, the Data Governance Act and the additional input sought on data spaces through the OPEN DEI initiative illustrate the importance the EU attributes to data sharing for society and economy. Moreover\, various (European and national) initiatives are exploring the potential\, architectures and implementations for federative data sharing. The ambition on federative data sharing as expressed in the EU Data Strategy can be summarized as: ‘Towards a federation of interoperable data spaces’. \nIn this presentation Mr Bastiaansen will present the work of the DASLOGIS (DAata Space for LOGIStics) project. It’s goal is to develop the architecture of a logistics data space conforming to the architectural guidelines as being defined by the International Data Space Association (IDSA) and conforming to the ambition of the EU Data Strategy of interoperable data spaces. It is addressed how it may support various types of (federative) data sharing\, as exemplified by multiple use cases and demos. \nSeminars are open to the ECTRI Members.\nPlease contact the Secretariat if you are interested to join: www.ectri.org/contact/

SUMMARY:ECTRI TG Freight and Logistics webinar #17
DESCRIPTION:Thomas McDonald from University of Newcastle who recently won the Young Researcher’s Award at TRA 2022 (TRA Visions 2022) will present his winning contribution. \nT-Vision: A Hybrid Subsurface Radar Inspection System For Intelligent Asset Management of Railway Tunnels \nThe UK Office of Rail and Road has repeatedly identified that inadequate accuracy and efficiency in hidden critical element detection constitutes one of the main current shortfalls in Network Rail’s infrastructure inspection deliverables. Railway tunnel subsurface inspection (RTSSI) to locate the multitude of concealed shafts in historic masonry structures has been particularly problematic for existing market technologies\, owing to recurrent limitations of survey dataset incompleteness and\nextended closure durations – attributed to laborious erection of support structures to probe crown structural health. In this context\, this research identified air-launched\, fixed-angle\, multidirectional ground penetrating radar systems to be the only technology practically capable of returning crown subsurface imagery. However\, 3D visualisation is lacking\, blind-spots are commonplace and field-of-view realignment is time-consuming. This project addresses identified gaps by developing T-Vision; the first air-launched hybrid rotational- ground penetrating radar assembly for RTSSI.\nSystem novelty extends to the deployment of a bespoke single rotating antenna setup that swiftly and accurately returns comprehensive 360-degree subsurface datasets in 3D; and also hybrid raster and helical scanning functionality\, capable of generating unique crown-raster imagery and pioneering hackle-helix point cloud datasets of the full tunnel subsurface. To validate technical efficacy of rotational- ground penetrating radar for RTSSI\, T-Vision was deployed in Kirton Tunnel (UK). Vertical distortion artifacts identified in raster visuals evidence concealed shaft detection efficacy\, whilst the form\, versatility\, and future innovation pathways for RTSSI hackle-helix point cloud datasets are deconstructed. The hackle-helix point cloud datasets present a viable basis for a future intelligent\, virtual infrastructure management platform for Network Rail. \nSeminars are open to the ECTRI Members.\nPlease contact the Secretariat if you are interested to join: www.ectri.org/contact/ \nTime event is presented in Central European Time (CET).
