SUMMARY:13th ECTRI Economics & Policy Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Title of the Presentation:\nTax Incidence in Heterogeneous Markets: The Pass-through of Air Passenger Taxes \nAbout the Webinar:\nThis paper examines the incidence and efficiency of an air passenger tax and the influence of supply and demand elasticity in a difference-in-differences framework. For identification\, I exploit the implementation of an air passenger tax on worldwide departures from Sweden and compare them with departures from nearby airports without an air passenger tax to the same destination. On average\, tax pass-through is immediate and nearly complete. Consistent with theoretical priors for oligopolistic markets\, tax incidence increases with competition but decreases with lower demand elasticity. The tax significantly reduces passenger numbers\, air transport capacity and global emissions. \nBio of Florian Wozny\nFlorian Wozny is an applied transport and environmental economist with a passion for studying transportation and how public policy can make a difference. To answer these questions\, he uses state-of-the-art econometric and statistical tools for predictive and causal analysis in surveys\, large administrative and corporate data sources. He is currently a Research Associate at the Institute of Air Transport in Cologne\, Germany. Florian was a Resident Research Affiliate at the Institute of Labor Economics in Bonn\, Germany from October 2014 to February 2020.\nWe look forward to your participation in this engaging and informative webinar. \n  \nSeminars are open to the ECTRI Members.\nPlease contact the Secretariat if you are interested to join: www.ectri.org/contact/

SUMMARY:14th ECTRI Economics & Policy Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Title of the Presentation: \nThe knowlEdge project and Decentralised Technical Intelligence (DTI) – Implications for transport economics \nAbout the Webinar: \nThe knowlEdge project (2021 – 2024) focused on transforming manufacturing and supply chain operations through the application of advanced computational techniques. By integrating real-time data processing and intelligent decision-making systems\, the project aimed to enhance efficiency\, flexibility\, and responsiveness within supply chains. This was achieved through intelligent resource planning and adaptive scheduling\, increased operational efficiency and reduced faulty output\, ensuring optimal resource utilisation and reduced operational costs. Decentralised Technical Intelligence (DTI) refers to the deployment of AI and machine learning algorithms in a distributed manner across various network nodes and stressing human involvement\, allowing for local data processing and autonomous decision-making without relying on a central authority. The knowlEdge project embodied DTI concepts by enabling decentralised\, real-time optimisation of supply chain activities. This approach not only improves operational efficiency but also enhances the resilience and adaptability of supply chains in the face of disruptions.Transport economics\, fundamentally concerned with the efficient allocation of resources in the transport sector\, could be significantly impacted by the integration of DTI within production management and supply chains. The knowlEdge project demonstrated that DTI can lead to cost reductions\, improved service quality and enhanced environmental sustainability within production and related transportation and logistical activities. By improving operations and reducing emissions through intelligent management\, DTI supports more sustainable and economically viable transport systems. Additionally\, smarter infrastructure investment driven by data insights\, also originating from production systems data exchange\, ensures that transport networks evolve in line with actual demand\, further boosting economic efficiency. \nBio of the presenter: \nStefan Walter has been a senior scientist at the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) since 2019. He is part of the Intelligent Supply Chains and Logistics team\, focusing on the Cognitive Production Industry within the Sustainable Products and Materials business area. His general research emphasises sustainable\, cognitive value chains and processes. As the coordinator of the Horizon 2020 project knowlEdge (2021 – 2024)\, Stefan oversaw advancements in AI applications for manufacturing. This project aimed to integrate artificial intelligence into production management\, including supply chain optimisation.Stefan’s academic background includes studies in geography and social sciences\, culminating in a doctorate in sustainable economic development. His professional experience spans various management and consulting activities in the logistics industry\, providing a practical edge to his academic and research endeavors. In addition\, he has also engaged in teaching assignments in economics\, logistics\, and supply chain management\, as well as offering general courses in business administration. Previous and current research areas include adaptation to changing conditions (climate change)\, sustainable development environmental sociology\, environmental governance\, economic policy\, macroeconomics\, energy economics\, innovation\, various management areas such as natural resource\, corporate\, risk\, logistics\, supply chains\, and decentralised intelligence\, industrial evolution and cognitive production.

DESCRIPTION:Title of the Presentation: \n‘How can aviation be decarbonized? A assessment of relevant policy measures in a Nordic context‘ by Dr. Inga Ydersbond. \nBio of Inga Ydersbond: \nInga Margrete Ydersbond holds a PhD in political science from the University of Oslo. Here\, she dealt with the EUs climate and energy policy\, lobbying\, political decision making and renewable energy. She is now a senior researcher at The Institute of Transport Economics. Here\, she works with many topics\, including organisation\, regulation\, electrification and sustainable transport system transformation.  A key focus for Ydersbond is the connection between political decisions\, the policies that are created to attain these decisions\, the implementation of those policies and their eventual outcomes. Her current projects include studying the organisation of the Norwegian rail sector\, sustainable aviation and investigating into criminality in the Norwegian second-hand car market. \nSeminars are open to the ECTRI Members.\nPlease contact the Secretariat if you are interested to join: www.ectri.org/contact/

SUMMARY:17th ECTRI Economics & Policy Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Title of the Presentation: \n‘Impacts of Shared E-scooters on Urban Transportation Systems‘ by Dr. Gabriel Dias \nBio of Gabriel Dias: \nDr. Gabriel Dias is a postdoctoral researcher at LNEC Department of Transportation. He recently finished his PhD in civil engineering at the University of Minho (supervisors: Paulo Ribeiro & Elisabete Arsenio). The research was funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology. In his doctoral studies\, he focused on applying discrete choice models to estimate the possible modal shift from cars to more sustainable modes of transportation\, including buses\, shared e-bikes\, shared e-scooters\, and walking in commutes and leisure trips. His studies also led to the assessment of how shared e-scooter usage can affect  city transportation planning and policy \nSeminars are open to the ECTRI Members.\nPlease contact the Secretariat if you are interested to join: www.ectri.org/contact/
