19/09/2017 The European Court of Auditors published today a Landscape Review: EU action on energy and climate change identifying seven main challenges, where EU should act to tackle climate change. These being: Energy and climate change governance; Evidence-based policy; The energy transition; Using research and innovation effectively; Planning for and tackling adaptation; Financing; and Involving EU citizens.
C. Alméras, ECTRI Secretary-General was invited to the ECA stakeholders’ meetingto discuss the Review outcomes. ECTRI welcomes the initiative by the ECA and considered that the messages derived from the Review are well chosen. The Review well states that the trend is serious and that transport has a large share of the problem; the summary of what the EU is doing in transport shows a number of failures in legislation. Against this background, the limited number of audits in the transport sector is somehow surprising and could therefore be called upon; Otherwise, on the main challenges part, ECTRI supports that a strong focus is given to evidence based policy, R&I and adaptation, but also believe that transport, considering the alarming situation, could have been given a bigger focus

The roadmap describes automated driving as one of the key technologies and major technological advancements influencing and shaping our future mobility and quality of life. ERTRAC defines safety, efficiency, comfort, social inclusion and accessibility as the main drivers of this development. They argue that automated driving must therefore take a key role in the European Transport policy, since it can support several of its objectives and societal challenges, such as road safety, congestion, decarbonisation, social inclusiveness, etc. As a European Technology Platform, ERTRAC gathers experts from the industry, research providers and public authorities. The first “Automated Driving Roadmap” of ERTRAC was issued in July 2015 and requested a complete update to cope with the many developments that happened since then. 02/06/2017 ECTRI @ International Transport Forum’s 2017 Summit. This year again, ECTRI joined business, government leaders and other transport stakeholders to discuss changes underway across the transport sector. The 2017 Summit theme - Governance of Transport – made it clear that a fundamental shift is needed in the way that global transport systems operate. In ECTRI President’s words “The governance of this new transport system has to be different from todays practice and research is needed to find the path towards the new system”. Adding to that “future transport include more interactions between modes, actors and transport types". This coordinated and cohesive approach to research and innovation strategies for all transport modes in Europe is the aim of the running SETRIS project
This new system is moving towards a sustainable and low-carbon transport and ECTRI, as knowledge partner of the ITF Decarbonising project is committed to support ITF project team to meet the project goal of building capacity to help close the gaps between climate commitments and the CO2 reductions drawn at COP21.
Furthermore, as key governance challenge, ECTRI’s President also voiced that “(...) this new Governance will require a new work force which requires training”. This imperative need for adaptation of training and education content, curricula, tools and methodologies for the professionals in all transports areas is being currently addressed in the context of the SKILLFUL project.
Finally, transport ministers of ITF member countries named Dr. Young Tae Kim the new Secretary-General of the ITF.
